Onion Joy was a performance that took place in the Fall of 1999 in Saskatoon.
I collected my body weight in yellow cooking onions, through invitation for donations, and arranged the onions around a chopping block in the gallery. I aimed to chop onions uninterrupted for one hour each day for five days. Onion Joy presented a defense against the cultural taboo of expressing emotion in a public forum.
The performance permitted me the chance to cry in public, while removing the source of my tears from any question of emotional state or stability.
